AbstractThe effects of geomagnetic activity on neutral winds are still one of the least sampled and understood parameters in the Earths upper atmosphere. As neutral wind dynamics are substantial contributors to ionospheric dynamics and thermospheric composition, their characterization and modeling are extremely useful for launches, space travel, and satellite work. However, there is still a severe lack of parameterization of the neutral winds, especially regarding their behavioral response after severe geomagnetic activity. Therefore, in other to understand better the Earths responses to such phenomena, this work will analyze the impacts of the April 23rd, 2023, which was an intense geomagnetic storm caused by two coronal mass ejections (CME-CME interaction) that disturbed the Earths magnetosphere (the main phase reaching about an SYM-H index of -200 nT). The intense nature of this storm led to exciting effects in the mesospheric (MNW) and thermospheric (TNW) neutral wind components, of which the characterization and analysis are the focus of this paper. Using meteor radar and Fabry-Perot Interferometer data from the Caribbean Climate Open Research and Education Center at the Culebra Island (CCORE - Puerto Rico - 18.31°N, 66.28°W) and Cachoeira Paulista (Brazil - 22.6°S, 45°W), sites located at the north and south hemisphere of the American sector but with similar geographic latitudes equidistant from the equator, we present the preliminary results of the responses of the April 23rd, 2023, geomagnetic storm on the neutral wind components. For more information about the solar origin of this geomagnetic storm, please check the companion paper of the AGU fall meeting titled A Study of Two Intense Geomagnetic Storms and Their Associated Solar Events During The Current Solar Cycle.
